Non-dilutive funding is capital you bring into your business without giving away equity. You keep your ownership percentage, your board seats, and your ability to decide where the business goes next. That is the entire appeal — and it is also why founders often skip the harder questions underneath it.

    What counts as non-dilutive

The common categories are grants, revenue-based financing, loans and lines of credit, and customer-funded growth (pre-orders, deposits, retainers, annual plans, paid pilots). They share one trait: none of them take a slice of the company. They do not share the same cost.

    Non-dilutive is not free

A grant can cost weeks of unpaid application work and restrict how the money is spent. Revenue-based financing is repaid from future revenue, which means a percentage of every dollar you earn goes back out before it reaches payroll. A loan carries interest and often a personal guarantee. Customer-funded growth is the cheapest capital available, but it obligates you to deliver.

    The questions worth answering first

    • What is the total repayment amount, not just the headline rate?
    • What restrictions come attached to how the money is used?
    • What happens to your cash flow in a slow month?
    • Could the same result be funded by customers instead?

Compare the real cost of each path before you chase any of them. Money that arrives on the wrong terms is more expensive than money you never took.
